How Disability Coverage Works

Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income when a covered condition keeps you from doing your job. You pay for coverage through payroll deductions. After a waiting period, weekly or monthly benefits are paid to you, not to your doctor or hospital. Please refer to your 2026 ExamWorks Benefits Guide, which can be found on Paycom Self-Service, for plan percentages, maximums, and waiting periods.

Short Term Disability (STD)

STD helps with near term needs. It pays a weekly benefit for disabilities that are expected to resolve in the short run, including pregnancy and recovery from surgery. Benefits begin after a short waiting period and last up to the plan’s maximum duration. Using in network medical care does not affect your STD benefit amount. Please refer to your 2026 ExamWorks Benefits Guide, which can be found on Paycom Self-Service, for plan percentages, maximums, and waiting periods.

Long Term Disability (LTD)

LTD is designed for serious conditions that keep you out of work for an extended time. After you meet the LTD waiting period, the plan pays a monthly benefit up to the plan’s maximum and may continue as long as you remain disabled under the policy definition. LTD may coordinate with other income sources such as Social Security disability benefits. Please refer to your 2026 ExamWorks Benefits Guide, which can be found on Paycom Self-Service, for plan percentages, maximums, and waiting periods.

How To File A Claim And What to Expect

If you expect to be out of work, notify your manager and contact NYLGBS to start a claim. You will provide basic details and your doctor will share medical information. Keep copies of all documents and respond quickly to requests. If approved, benefits begin after the waiting period and are paid on the plan’s schedule. Keep NYLGBS updated on your recovery and return to work date.

IMPORTANT: Filing early helps avoid delays. Start your claim as soon as you know your expected disability date.

Learn The Lingo

STD (Short-Term Disability):  Replaces income for a brief period (weeks to months) due to a temporary illness or injury, typically starting shortly after the disability begins.

LTD (Long-Term Disability):  Replaces income for an extended period, often years or until retirement, and usually starts after STD benefits end, covering more serious or long-lasting health conditions.

Elimination period:The elimination period is the time after becoming disabled and before your benefits begin. Think of it as a "time deductible”.

Benefit percentage/maximum: The portion of your pre disability earnings the plan pays, up to a set cap.

Own occupation vs any occupation: How the plan defines disability at different stages of a claim.

Pre-existing condition limitation: A rule that may limit benefits for recent conditions or treatments.

Offsets: Other income sources that may reduce your LTD payment.
